Location – Princes Street Gardens, in the shadow of the Edinburgh Castle Typology -Commemorative war memorial WW2 Construction / Completion Dates - Past Millennia, erected 1978 Description - Large naturally formed stone raised on 3 smaller stones. With carved inscription to the front and rear inscription front “during the war years 1940 – 45 the Norwegian brigade and other army units were raised and trained in Scotland here we found hospitality, friendship and hope during dark years of exile in grateful memory of our friend and allies on these isles this stone was erected in the year 1978” inscription back “this boulder was brought from Norway where it was worn and shaped by thousands of years by the forces of nature. Frost, running water, rock and ice until it obtained its present shape” Artist – Naturally formed stone. The stone is 800, 000 000 years old and was formed during the last ice age, it is around 8 tonne in weight. Urban – Rural Context - Prominent City centre position within Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. Rationale – The granite boulder was a gift from the Norwegian government as an acknowledgement for the hospitality and support given to troops during WW2. |
