Location – Festival Square, Lothian Road, Edinburgh Typology -Commemorative, political, freestanding figurative sculpture (MADONNA & CHILD) Construction / Completion Dates - Commissioned by The City of Edinburgh Council and unveiled by Mrs Suganya Chetty, a member of the African National congress living in exile in Edinburgh Description - Literal figurative, life size, patinated Bronze. With reference to the use of the imagery of the Madonna and child / mother and child imagery within European / Christian art. Figurative mother and child with ‘shanty town’ references. A commission was raised during the early 1980’s to finance, and oversee the conception of a Public Art work to celebrate and mark the struggle of the ANC against apartheid and injustice in South Africa.
